envia Mitteldeutsche Energie AG (enviaM), based in Chemnitz, Lausitz Energie Bergbau AG and Lausitz Energie Kraftwerke AG (LEAG), based in Cottbus, and EP New Energies GmbH (EPNE) are driving forward the expansion of renewable energies in eastern Germany. The companies intend to develop new solar and wind parks together in Lusatia and signed a cooperation agreement for this purpose in Cottbus on November 15, 2022. The first planned projects involve a solar park and a wind farm in the Jänschwald mining district.

“The enviaM Group has been present in Lusatia for many years. We are looking forward to making a further contribution to the transformation of energy generation in Lusatia together with LEAG as a strong regional partner,” emphasizes Patrick Kather, member of the Board of Management at enviaM.

In the medium term, the cooperation is expected to result in plants with a nominal output in the triple-digit megawatt range. The planned sites are mainly post-mining areas, but additional potential areas are also to be developed in the further course of the project.

Thorsten Kramer, CEO of LEAG: “A groundbreaking project like the GigawattFactory needs strong partners to pool expertise and resources. That is why we see the cooperation with the enviaM Group as another important building block in the development of Lusatia into the largest center of green energy in Germany. In addition, we also want to be active outside the post-mining areas to generate as much green energy as possible.”

The planned development of the projects is to be carried out by a joint company.
To this end, LEAG will acquire 50% of the shares in the enviaM subsidiary EEL Erneuerbare Energien Lausitz GmbH & Co. KG, based in Cottbus. The transaction is still subject to approval by the Federal Cartel Office.

As part of the cooperation, the joint venture will commission the companies envia THERM and EP New Energies with project development and project planning. After implementation of the projects, joint operation of the solar and wind farms is planned at a later date.
