LEAG submits permit application for its first wind farm

17 wind turbines are to be built for Forst-Briesnig II on recultivation areas of Jänschwalde opencast mine.

The energy company will submit the permit application for LEAG’s first wind farm project to the Brandenburg State Office for the Environment tomorrow, Wednesday, July 7th, 2021. The approval procedure will be conducted in accordance with the Federal Immission Control Act (BlmSchG) with public participation and an environmental impact assessment. The application comprises around 1,8000 pages, on which the project is described in detail and the relevant factors influencing the environment and the surrounding communities are examined in detail. This includes topics such as noise, casts shadows, species protection and a whole range of other technical and planning aspects.

From the very beginning, LEAG and its project developer EP New Energies GmbH (EPNE), have placed the highest value on transparency and citizen participation, even under Corona restrictions. Following a mailer in March and an initial citizens’ dialog for the Jänschwalde area on June 12, 2021, there will be another citizens’ dialog next Friday, July 9, 2021, at Gut Neu Sacro near Forst. Here, residents and interested parties can find out about the Forst-Briesnig II wind farm and other projects that LEAG is planning together with EPNE and other partners in the north of the Lusatian mining region. Interested parties can register for the citizens’ dialog at www.leag.de/kontakt/anwohnerinfo97 and select a time slot for their visit. Wearing a medical mouth-nose protection or FFP2 mask is required at the event site. In addition, each attendee should be able to provide proof of full Corona vaccination protection as a self-disclosure, a negative test, or previously overcome Corona illness.

The Forst-Briesnig II wind farm is to be built on a recultivation area of the Jänschwalde open pit mine in the vicinity of the existing Forst-Briesnig I wind farm. The erection of 17 wind turbines is planned, each with a hub height of 167 meters and a total output of 102 MW. They will be able to generate around 260,000 MW of electricity per year – mathematically the equivalent to the annual electricity requirements of around 74,000 households. LEAG plans to put the wind farm into operation in about three years after a detailed approval process and construction. The site is LEAG’s responsibility under mining law and is currently being restored for agricultural use.

“The general conditions for the project in the Lusatian mining area are ideal”, explains EPNE managing director Dominique Guillou. “The site in the post-mining landscape offers a very large contiguous area with good wind accessibility, large distances to residential areas and few conflicts with regard to nature conservation. This is rarely found in this combination in Germany. Renewables can also be an important driver for successful structural change in Lusatia.”

EPNE is a joint venture between EPH and LEAG based in Cottbus and Berlin. It develops renewable energy projects for LEAG and MIBRAG in the fields of solar and wind energy.
